SP Balasubramaniam is a veteran singer, who has been associated with the film industry of India over the past thirty years. SPB affectionately called, is best known for his versatility, incredible voice, unique style of singing and a voice with depth. Born June 4, 1946, Konetammapeta near Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, SP Balasubramaniam belongs to an orthodox Brahmin family telugu. Has two brothers and five sisters. He is the elder brother of the well-known singer SP Sailaja. His father SP Sambamurthy was a well known exponent of Harikatha. SP Balasubramanyam developed a keen interest in music at an early age. Singing was his hobby and he learned to play musical instruments, including flute and harmonium on his own, without the need to acquire formal training for it. Since his father wanted him to become an engineer, he took admission in the School of Engineering and JNTU AMIE also pursued a course.

SPB participated in a series of singing competitions when he was studying, and won several awards. One such competition was the turning point in his life. In 1964, the music director SP Balasubramaniam Kodandapani observed in the performance of a singing competition organized by Chennai based telugu Culture. The musical director was very impressed by the performance of SPB and decided to submit it as a singer in the Telugu film 'Sri Sri Sri Ramanna Marya "(1967), which had composed the songs. Other music directors of the South of India the film industry were equally impressed by the new voice. The singer was offered the chance to sing in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam films.
